Located about 4.5 hours from Windhoek, the Desert Quiver Camp is an excellent location as starting point and doorway to the magical region of Sossuvlei and the Namib Desert. Being the first stop on our itinerary upon leaving the capital, this was my first encounter with the desert.
Getting to Desert Quiver Camp from Windhoek
Unique Desert Living
I was truly impressed with the unique style of the camp. The place features 24 self-catering accommodation units in the shape of a tent. Each unit has its own kitchenette in the outside patio where you can cook your own food. Fresh food supplies can be ordered at the reception daily. At night, we sat in the patio, everything was pitch black, no artificial lights. If you are so used to living in the city, you forget what it means to experience absolute darkness. We heard hooved animals gallop nearby our cottage. It was exhilarating and uniquely frightening.
Swimming Pool
The swimming pool definitely has the iconic desert aesthetic. Overlooking the nothingness of the landscape, it is propped at the foot of a massive stone formation. The pool area features a bar, serving an array of cold refreshments. A must try in Namibia is definitely the Savanna Cider, which was the go-to drink of almost the entire group.
Dining
Besides the bar by the pool, the area features a restaurant at Sossusvlei Lodge, around 5 minutes with the car from Quiver Camp. The restaurant boasts of an al fresco terrace offering magnificent views over Elim Dune and of the floodlit waterhole where you can watch the passing parade of oryx, springbok, jackal, ground squirrel and hyena, whilst enjoying exquisite food and wine.The dinner buffet is definitely a force to be reckoned with. I never would have imagined that one of the best buffets I ever had, would be in the middle of a desert in Africa. It is delightful how much effort they put into the preparation and presentation of the food as well as the little details that make an outstanding dining experience.
The restaurant area is only lit with candles and artificial lights are limited to the buffet area. It was an incredible dining experience, especially since we are so used to eating with considerable amount of light.
